I LOVED reading the book Matilda by Roald Dahl. This is such an entertaining book for young children and even middle schoolers. To me, I think that it is just a fun book for anyone. The author does an amazing job at really expressing the feelings of the main character, Matilda. I would say that this book is for upper level elementary students and older. Even though the book is fictional, it portrays meaningful life lessons that children will be able to take away between Matilda and the biggest blessing in her life, Miss. Honey.
First of all, Matilda is the main character of the book and she is six years old when her parents finally made the decision to send her to school. Matilda wanted to start school since she was four years old. Matilda is a very unique little girl in that she is incredibly smart for her age, has magical powers, and shares a special bond between her and her teacher, Miss Honey. Matilda has a mother, father, and an unpleasant older brother that follows in the same foot steps as her parents. Her father, Harry is a crooked car salesman and Matilda hated that. No one else Matilda's age would know any better, but she sure did. Matilda's mother, Zinnia didn't do much of anything except her hair, makeup, and played bingo. Michael was Matilda's older brother and he acted just like his parents. None of Matilda's family wanted anything to do with her because she was different than them. Next comes Miss.Honey. Miss Honey saved Matilda from her family just like Matilda saved Miss Honey from different things in her life, but you will have to read to find out more! Agatha Trunchbull was the principle of the school that Matilda attended and just so happens to be Miss Honey's aunt. The two were night and day difference and under unfortunate circumstance, Miss Honey was raised by Ms.Trunchbull. Ms. Trunchbull was the meanest, most vicious person on this planet. Every student in the entire school cringed when they heard her voice and they did whatever they could to avoid her.
Throughout the book, Matilda and Miss Honey played tricks on Ms.Trunchbull because she had the same feeling as all of the other children in the school regarding Ms.Trunchbull. She was an evil lady and needed to be punished. Matilda and Miss Honey's bond was inseparable and it was evident that they loved each other. I think this book is special in particular because it shares the love and compassion teachers have for their students and I think that is reassuring. Everyone loved Miss Honey and Miss Honey adored all of her students.. Matilda in particular!
The end of the book was the most special part and you will just have to read to find out more because I would not want to give that much away! I promise it is a book worth reading and your students will love it!
